Life in the fast lane...
When I decided to leave a high paying job as a portfolio manager at a major financial institution most people thought I was nuts. "Why would you give up the security of a good paying investment bank job and all the perks that go along with it?" I must admit when I first made the jump back to the private trading world I was thinking the same thing. Here I was successfully climbing the corporate ladder with a bright future ahead. Life was good right?....
Well on the outside looking in maybe, but the stress of 80+ hr trading weeks were taking thier toll not to mention a lot of the fun out of it. No time for family, friends, vacations or simple weekend recreation. It was all about round the clock 24/7 work and research in quest of the next big trading opportunity and in that regard it worked well.
It was a very intense performance driven environment and I thrived in it. However as I saw friends and aquaintences enjoying the simple pleasures of a life with "free" time (friends who often envied my fortunate life style) I knew there was more to life then the relentless pursuit of wealth that I was chasing.
I thought long and hard before making that leap but the lure of a more relaxed pace of life was worth much more then the attractive compensation package I was being paid. After all I still had all the necessary skills and trading resources needed to trade for my own accounts. My business plan was to trade my own accounts using the exact same strategies and methodologies I employed when managing multi-million dollar portfolios (albeit on a somewhat smaller scale).
Fast forward to the present....
I'm very happy to say the plan was a resounding success. Long gone are the 80 hr trading weeks and stress of ever increasing portfolio performance targets. These days I trade from either my home office or my downtown office location. I take a minimum of 4 vacations a year now, spend more quality time with my family have managed to hit new equity highs 15 out of the past 16 years.
